About Conner Gwyn Schenck PLLC
Richard Conner, Holt Gwyn and Jim Schenck began practicing construction law together in the early 1980s. In 1988, their North Carolina-based firm merged into Patton Boggs LLP, a prominent public affairs and business law firm headquartered in Washington, D.C., where their construction law practice developed a strong national reputation. In 1999, the three partners left Patton Boggs to form Conner Gwyn Schenck PLLC. They have rededicated the firm to a law practice devoted exclusively to the construction industry.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Messrs. Conner, Gwyn, and Schenck were principals in the National Institute of Construction Law, Inc., which authored Construction and Design Law, a multi-volume construction law treatise and case reporting service published by the Michie Company. One of the managing editors of Construction and Design Law, Paul Davis, left the National Institute of Construction Law and joined Conner Gwyn Schenck PLLC at its founding.
The firm has added several experienced construction lawyers from other construction law firms. Hank Jarrett joined the firm in 2001, and was followed by Jay Wilkerson in 2002. Joe Gram and Doug Jeremiah joined the firm in 2006. Drew Chapin joined the firm in 2007.
Since 1999, Conner Gwyn Schenck PLLC has focused mainly on construction industry clients and cases in North Carolina. The firm’s emphasis has been on project-level services, including project delivery, contract documents, dispute resolution, and land use and environmental compliance. Although best known for contract law and litigation, the firm also provides transactional and corporate services, including leasing and financing, acquisitions, divestitures and continuation plans, and serves as outside corporate counsel or as local support to corporate counsel. The firm’s interest and experience in the construction industry has led it to work in the public policy arena. CGS members regularly advocate and formally comment upon proposed legislation, regulatory compliance, and public service work for the industry. In addition, Messrs. Conner, Gwyn and Schenck serve as mediators and arbitrators.
Most of the firm’s clients are contractors, but the firm also represents owners, particularly local governments and commercial developers. The firm also represents design professionals, suppliers and surety companies. The firm serves as local counsel for many out-of-state firms.
