Holt Gywn, one of the founding members of Conner Gwyn Schenck PLLC, died on September 18, 2017.
Born on September 11, 1949, Holt grew up in Winston-Salem in a family proud of its long legacy as native North Carolinians for many generations. Holt was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Wake Forest University School of Law. Upon graduating from law school he moved to Greensboro and joined the office of the United States Attorney, Middle District of North Carolina, where for four years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney he prosecuted white collar fraud and environmental violations, and represented U.S. agencies in civil disputes.
For the majority of his career, Holt’s practice concentrated in construction, environmental, and employment disputes, and business activities for private industry clients. Holt co-authored numerous books and was the author of more than twenty-five articles on construction and environmental topics. From 2007-2015, he was Editor-in-Chief of the semiannual Journal of the American College of Construction Lawyers. He lectured frequently to bar association and industry groups.
Holt had extensive experience in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures. He was a Fellow in the College of Commercial Arbitrators, a member of the American Arbitration Association’s Construction Mega Project Panel and its Large, Complex Case Program Panel of Arbitrators and Neutrals. Mr. Gwyn was also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London, UK, and a member of the CPR Construction Environmental Panels, New York, NY.
Holt was a highly regarded member of the North Carolina and American Bar Associations. In 2014, the American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law honored Holt with the Cornerstone Award, the highest award presented by the Forum and which honors members who have provided long-term exceptional service to the construction industry, to the public and to the legal profession.
